Jewels on the runway

Jewels on the runway

The Italian spring collections put everything out there for people to see — the economic stresses on creativity and the loss of power as designers let others tell them what to make. Oh yes, there were some nice clothes too.

Rule of ikat prints
In the upside-down world of today’s Italian fashion, houses that once sashayed to a raunchy rhythm danced to a different tune. Gucci went sporty, with crisp Neoprene white outfits and techno treatments.
At Gucci, the designer Frida Giannini sent out a fine collection of streamlined sportswear — what she called “mixing in new technology, carbon fibre and crepe de chine,” with more traditional skills of tiny tucks and strips and of treated leather.
Frida offered cutout dresses and stretchy high-waist trousers garnished with the cords and buckles of extreme sports. A jacket with strips of leather embroidered in an ikat pattern looked unusual, and the pattern also served as a grainy print, as if pixellated. But while it took skill to attach all those metal bits, it was confined to the surface.

Resolute femininity
Veronica Etro seems wary of being tagged as a hippie, even though she followed that trail again this season but far more discreetly, with faded flower patterns and a relaxed feel. Liquid pajama pants were part of a long, lean look that helped to take the focus away from the familiar Bohemian dresses, pretty as they are.
A circular frill of fabric at the chest of a dress or even a jump suit caught what Etro called “relaxed ease” and “resolute femininity.”
Botanical prints seemed to grow organically over the liquid soft silhouettes. And although the show could have done with some major pruning, everything in Etro’s garden is flourishing.

Touch of the tribal
Ferragamo show has yet to put a focus on footwear. There were clean, bold architectural gestures — a compass sweep to trace the exaggerated roundness of jodhpur pants, a cumulus of full skirt, perforated suede to prove the house skill with leather. And neutral colours were dramatically punctuated with everything from sunflower yellow to blood red, fuchsia and purple. The focus of the collection was its lightness, with coats settling gently over wafting skirts. Touches of the tribal — a vivid brush print or a beaded neckpiece — were discreetly done.

Light as a cloud
Fendi is known for its bags and fur. Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, who share the design challenge at Fendi, were on the same page.
“I wanted a cloud in a beautiful day — lightness and transparency,” said Lagerfeld of his vaporous dresses in white or ecru.
The dangerously high platform shoes were wound round the ankles with what looked like flesh-coloured hose. Evening bags were transparent plexiglass clutches.
The sum of the collection, sent out to plink-and-squeak abstract music, was a gentle homage to delicate Italian handwork, but it offered a fashion message — the blouse, worn with skirts, shorts or pants, is an alternative to the ubiquitous dress.

Listen to the call of the wild
The twin brothers Dan and Dean Caten of Dsquared2 took the camping theme for their female followers next summer. It was all about adapting the needs of a die-hard city girl to the wilderness. So why bother to take the dry-cleaning bag off that purple evening gown — just wear it wrapped in plastic. Worried about hunters mistaking you for Bambi? Wrap your waist in a DayGlo pink skinny belt, or don’t take any chances and go with a full-skirted dress in bright orange.
Use insects as jewellery and don’t forget to top it all off with a stylish trucker hat and retro glasses Dsquared2 introduced this year.

Recipe rewritten
Moschino collection was an abstract in the evening attire, where short, bold, puff-skirted dresses in fruit and flower prints had loops of multi-coloured beading down the front in an attempt to look like apron straps.
But the real recipes of this collection were some the house has had for years — its message T-shirts, the three strands of pearls lining the hem of a cropped black jacket and matching short skirt, the fitted leather biker jacket covered in colorful flower buttons or gold chains.
Even a gold-buttoned denim suit, with pockets formed from mini “Barbie doll” versions of the same jacket, looked like it was something from the ’80s heyday of Franco Moschino rather than the brand’s current designer, Rossella Jardini.

NRI family lands in Punjab jail, hours after marriage

Hoshiarpur (Punjab): A family of NRIs from Britain and the US, including a groom who rode an elephant for his wedding, his mother and his sisters, have landed in prison here - just hours after the ceremony.

At least nine members of the NRI family have already been arrested by the Punjab Police and efforts are being made to nab others as well, police officials said on Tuesday.

All of them are British and American passport holders.

The NRI family, which comes from London's Southall area and Leicester city in Britain, and Connick and Woodland towns in California, US, have been accused of attacking the owner of a popular marriage hall, Green Fields, in this town Saturday evening.

The owner of the marriage hall and his son were injured in the incident after a mob of 15-20 'baraatis' (groom's party) attacked them inside their house. The attack was provoked by the theft of a bag belonging to the wedding party from inside the marriage hall complex.

The groom Gurpreet Singh, 27, his mother Sukhwinder Kaur, both from Southall, and two sisters, Reema Bains and Seema Sanghera, both from California, have been lodged in the Hoshiarpur jail after a local court sent them to judicial remand on Monday.

Others arrested included relatives of the groom, Amarjit Singh and Salwinder Singh Sohal from Leicester in Britain, Amarinder Singh Sohal from Bremmen-Norway, and Inderjit Singh and Harjit Singh from California.

The groom's father, Gurdev Singh, has also been booked but has not yet been arrested.

The police have confiscated the passports of those NRIs named in the case registered here. The family has been charged with attempt to murder, criminal trespass, rioting, assault and robbery under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various sections of the Arms Act as the marriage hall owner accused them of firing weapons.

"We are investigating the matter. The accused were arrested within hours of the incident from their village," an investigating officer said. The NRIs hail from a village near Mahilpur town, 20 km from here, and had flown down specially for the wedding.

Pak House to grill Younis over ‘fixing’

Islamabad
Oct. 6: Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan, coach Intikhab Alam and Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ijaz Butt have been summoned to appear before their country’s parliamentary standing committee on sports for questioning regarding allegations that they deliberately threw the games against Australia and New Zealand in the just-concluded Champions Trophy in South Africa.
Pakistan captain Younis Khan has, however, denied the allegations. “We performed up to the mark, winning or losing is part of the game. When I said I tried to save my fractured finger (while taking a catch against New Zealand) I did not mean I deliberately threw the catch away,” Younis Khan said. The Pakistan skipper said his conscience was clear and that he would appear before the Parliament body with an open heart. “They can ask me whatever they want. I am clear and all the team members are clear.”
“There is a feeling that the (Pakistan) team lost deliberately to Australia (who later won the event) and then New Zealand (in the semi-final). We will investigate it and question the players and management (of the PCB),” said the chairman of the Pakistan National Assembly’s standing committee on sports, Mr Jamshed Ahmed Dasti. “There were clear-cut signs that the team did not want to win both the matches. We will dig out what was the cause of their under-performance,” he claimed.
Australia might not have qualified for the semi-final had Pakistan won against them and India could have advanced had they defeated the West Indies. The ICC will also investigate the charges of match-fixing in the Pakistan-New Zealand semi-final.

Big-hit Rohit vows to rock on

Hyderabad
Oct. 6: Rohit Sharma may be out of the Indian team but is definitely not down. The middle order batsmen is in fact charting a new course to get back into the national side — the Champions League Twenty20 tournament.
Bowlers are bound to face the ire of this aggressive Deccan Chargers player as he prepares to turn the heat on to catch the attention of selectors who overlooked him. Rohit tried to play it down though. “It’s disappointing to be out of the national team but that’s part of a cricketer’s career and I’ll take it in my stride,” the 22-year-old told this newspaper on Tuesday.
“It’s not the end of my career — I have a long way to go, and if I do well in the Champions League, I am sure I will make my way back into the Indian team,” he added.
Is he itching to prove a point? “It’s always tempting but I don’t want to make a statement about my batting capabilities to anyone. I just want to go out there and enjoy my game, which in turn should result in good performances,” Rohit maintained.
“The Champions League is a huge platform for me, I will go all out to get big scores for my team, which is favourite to win the Cup,” an upbeat Rohit continued.
Asked about his preference in the batting line-up, Rohit said he was game with any slot. “At the beginning of IPL-2 I was batting up the order and subsequently moved down. I am ready to bat anywhere the captain and coach want me to,” he informed.
Rohit’s ability to adapt to various match situations was evident in IPL-2 where he pulled off improbable wins — blasting 22 runs in the final over including a last ball six against Kolkata Knight Riders to revive the Chargers campaign towards the end being a case in point.
“I love the pressure situations, they push my game to a different level... and when you deliver, the satisfaction is immense. I am looking forward to such innings in the Champions League as well,” Rohit said, mindful of his added responsibilities as vice-captain, batting mainstay, sharp fielder and breakthrough bowler.
However, the burden is lightened, courtesy faithful fans. “I love the Hyderabadis who have always supported us. In the inaugural IPL though we did not do well they were right behind us. I thank them for that as it powered us when IPL-2 came around,” Rohit said.
He vowed to do his best to make the city smile. “To be playing in Hyderabad is a special feeling. I’ve always done well here and consider it a lucky venue. I promise the fans that everyone of us (in the team) who is wearing a Deccan Chargers T-shirt will give our best to garner greater glory for Hyderabad,” he said.

Spinners will hold key: Gilchrist

Hyderabad
Oct. 6: With the countdown for the cricketing extravaganza — the Champions League T20 — having begun, Deccan Chargers’ skipper Adam Gilchrist and coach Darren Lehmann shifted a gear in the IPL holders’ preparations on Tuesday.
Asked about the plan to fill the vacant opener’s spot left by Herschelle Gibbs (he will play for Cape Cobras in the tournament), Gilchrist said, “Well, we have a lot of players who could play a crucial role in the opener slot. We have guys such as VVS Laxman, Tirumalsetti Suman and Azhar Bilakhia who can do the job for us as they have been openers before... we will take a call on that but we have a healthy set of options with us.”
Gilly was candid in admitting that the burden of expectation will always be there but the team knew how to overcome that. “It’s (burden) always there, no two ways about it. But we also do know that we have to perform even better now and fulfill the expectations that the city of Hyderabad and the state has on us.”
Coach Lehmann pointed out that the role of spinners will be crucial in this tournament.
“We have Ojha (Pragyan) among our ranks who is the best in the business at the moment and is doing the job asked of him. He will play a crucial role as we have seen in both the editions of IPL. His role will be the key,” Lehmann said.
The discussion shifted to the role of Andrew Symonds in the side. Gilchrist said, “I don’t need to tell you what a class act he is. He has proved it to the world and is working extremely hard to be in his best shape possible going into the tournament.”
Everyone was keen to know the factors that led to the Bulls upsetting the favourites in the IPL to clinch a memorable victory. On a lighter note, Lehmann quipped, “The biggest factor was coach Darren Lehmann. Jokes apart, it’s the team. By this we mean, not just the playing XI but the entire squad with the support staff. We are a close-knit group and get along really well. Also, our management has been so supportive that we can’t ask for more and our performances this year has been a true indication of that.”

Who hears the shareholder?

Leave it to the shareholders, which is what some people say, implying that shareholders can decide whether the CEO of a company is getting a “vulgar” salary that needs to be slashed.
But what powers does the shareholder have when most of the promoters own 40 per cent and more of their company in one way or another and the institutional representatives are silent observers and independent directors are hardly so!

Owner in name only

The shareholder is the owner of the company in name only and on that one day of the year, namely the annual general meeting..
He gets to have his say for three minutes and then is given a cold drink against a coupon and wafers.
That’s it. If he is a shareholder activist like Dinesh Lakhani a shareholder who studies balance sheets meticulously it’s difficult to say what he has about a 100-page annual report in three minutes. And then mostly chamchas of the company come and waste time singing the companies praises in poems, couplets and shairies.
A serious shareholder has to have the grit to last out.

Crores despite losses

The minister for corporate affairs Salman Khurshid has really opened a Pandora’s Box. But it is a subject that badly needs to be thrashed out. It is not that it has not been dealt with earlier but it needs to be dealt with again and again because companies find various loopholes to get round the rules and regulations.
Besides there are 8,000 listed companies and no one knows what is happening in them.
A lot of them are defaulters and are making losses but the owners and their families continue to get hefty remunerations.
Mr Virendra Jain of Midas Touch Investors Association cites the example of the Escorts chief taking home Rs 3-4 crore even though the company has been making losses and the shareholders got no dividend last year.
In the case of Great Eastern Shipping for instance a shareholder Z. Jehangir wrote to the company protesting that it had cut the dividend by 50 per cent from Rs 16 to Rs 8, but the family members including sons, wives and daughters continued to take home hefty remunerations. He wanted to know why they did not cut their perks etc by 50 per cent. Who will listen to Jehangir?

The Esop story

While CEO salaries is a very tricky issue the bottom line is that the dividend is given only after all the expenses are deducted and these include the crores taken as perks by the CEO, executives and directors both dependent and independent!
Mr Khurshid will also have to look into the employees share options (Esops) where chairmen and directors make crores when they sell these Esop shares. They get it at par value and sell it at market value and make crores.
Even though Sebi has amended the rules for Esops, the system continues to favour the top bosses.
As Mr Lakhani says the concept was taken from the West and has been turned into daylight robbery. He says leaving the decision to the shareholders is an eyewash as there is neither shareholders nor corporate democracy. In our country he says we have good, bad and unscrupulous promoters. The one proxy of the promoters makes a mockery of the shareholders’ numbers. For many of the listed finance companies for instance, he points out, their main business is in subsidiaries and at least a dozen or two dozen employees draw between Rs 2-3 crore annually.
The main company shows losses to the shareholders.

Mukesh fields directors in SC

New Delhi, Oct. 6: Escalating the Ambani gas battle, the directors of Mr Mukesh Ambani-led RIL on Tuesday separately told the Supreme Court that the board had not approved the family MoU, which divides gas between companies run by the two brothers.
In identical affidavits, the seven full-time members of RIL board said it was not true that the board had “accepted and approved the contents of the memorandum of understanding (between Mr Mukesh and Mr Anil Ambani) dated June 18, 2005.”
While making it clear that the scheme of demerger, dividing the Reliance empire between the two Ambani brothers, was approved by the RIL board, they said the family MoU was not placed before them.
The affidavits have added a new twist to the gas battle, final hearing on which is to commence from October 20. The firms run by the brothers’ moved the apex court after the Bombay High Court directed RIL to supply gas to RNRL at $2.34 per mmBtu.
The MoU, negotiated by mother, Ms Kokilaben, provided for natural gas from RIL’s KG-D6 and other fields being divided among firms run by Mr Mukesh and Mr Anil in 60:40 ratio.
The gas to Mr Anil Ambani’s firm RNRL was to be supplied at $2.34 per mmBtu, a rate that is 44 per cent lower than the price government approved for KG-D6 gas in 2007.
The Anil Ambani group firm, RNRL, meanwhile, alleged that the director-general of hydrocarbons, Mr V.K. Sibal, was acting at the behest of RIL and sought intervention of the Supreme Court.

Pranab asks West to loosen grip

New Delhi
Oct. 6: The finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, on Tuesday asked the developed world to recognise the role of developing countries as drivers of future global economic growth and give them greater voice in the World Bank and the IMF.
Speaking at the plenary session of the annual meeting of the World Bank and the IMF in Istanbul, Mr Mukherjee, said that any resistance to the overdue change “will only detract from the legitimacy, credibility and effectiveness of these institutions.”
“The IMF and the World Bank cannot emerge from the crisis unchanged. They have to enhance their legitimacy to perform their expanded roles and mandates effectively. Far reaching changes to the governance structure of the international financial institutions (IFIs) are needed to reflect the changing dynamics of the global economy,” said the finance minister.
As a first step, he said the early ratification of the April 2008 package of quota reforms for the IMF is an urgent requirement. “The next quota review should be completed by January 2011. To preserve the IMF as a quota-based institution, at the minimum, there should be a doubling of quotas,” said Mr Mukherjee.
He said that parity in the vote shares of developed and developing countries would greatly enhance the legitimacy of the IMF. “This can be achieved through a seven to eight per cent shift in quota shares. Even to achieve the shift of at least five per cent called for by the G20 leaders in Pittsburgh, we would have to work beyond the current quota formula,” he said.
He said the other aspects of governance reform should follow and flow from the quota rebalancing. “Enhanced political engagement of ministers in the IMF-related issues is best achieved through improvements in the functioning of the International Monetary and Financial Committee. The chairs in the executive board should be redistributed on a more equitable basis amongst the regions.”
He suggested that the realignment should be based on World Bank specific parameters. “Economic weight with primacy to GDP-PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) should be the main criteria,” he said.

Pakistan a ‘black hole’ for US funds

Washington, Oct. 6: Despite the US providing huge amounts of funds to Pakistan to enable it fight the menace of terrorism, Islamabad has failed to ensure that the monetary assistance is utilised exactly for the purpose it is meant for.
A large portion of international aid has been misutilised by Pakistan, and the assistance meant for enabling the country’s security forces to fight against the extremists vanishes into a proverbial ‘black hole’, a report in the Boston Globe said.
Pakistan has barely used the US assistance for the purpose it is meant for. It is estimated that between 2002 and 2008, only 500 million of the 6.6 billion dollars in military aid meant to help Pakistan fight militants was actually spent on its intended purpose. This clearly shows that Islamabad is playing a “shell game” with US aid, the report said.
The United States on Tuesday admitted that past experiences have shown giving aid to Pakistan has not been a successful proposition, but, said the Obama Administration would make sure that the aid is not diverted.
“From 2002 to 2008, two generals in Pakistan mentioned that of the over $6 billion that was to go to aid the Pakistani army, only approximately $500 million reached its intended target,” Mr Gibbs said. The US senate last month voted to triple the non-military aid to Pakistan to USD 1.5 billion. India has time and again expressed its concern over increasing US aid to Pakistan for the fight against terrorism, saying that the money is diverted by Islamabad to support hostile operations against it.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan foreign minister, Mr Shah Mahmood Qureshi, arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day visit, during which he is scheduled to meet the top officials of the Obama Administration, to discuss issues including seeking more aid.

MI5: Osama had plans to attack western targets

London, Oct. 6: Osama bin Laden led al-Qaeda was planning a number of “major attacks” on western interests in the weeks leading to 9/11, including the morning itself, Britain’s intelligence agency MI5 had warned the government, a new history of the security services has said.
In a memo from July 6, 2001, MI5 said increasing reports were “sufficient to conclude that OBL (Osama Bin Laden) and those that share his agenda are currently well advanced in operational planning for a number of major attacks on western interests.”
Memos circulated to senior figures showed increasing concern right up to the moment the terrorist leader launched his 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, killing nearly 3,000 people, The Daily Telegraph reported.
MI5 had discounted the threat from Islamic extremism six years earlier and did not believe America was vulnerable, the files of the security services have indicated. Christopher Andrew, a Cambridge historian, was given access to all MI5 files since it began in 1909 for Defence of the Realm, the first authorised history of an intelligence service.
Prof Andrews said: “Similar Security Service warnings to Whitehall of imminent attack continued at intervals... up to and including the morning of September 11.”

It’s not time to leave Afghanistan: Gates

Washington

Oct. 6: Calling the Afghan-Pakistan border as the “modern epicentre of jihad”, the US has made it clear that it’s not leaving Afghanistan as a Taliban takeover of the country would empower the Al Qaeda terrorist network.
“The thing to remember about Afghanistan is that country and particularly the Afghan-Pakistan border is the modern epicentre of jihad,” the secretary of defence, Mr Robert Gates, said at a forum sponsored by the George Washington University on Monday.
“They now have the opportunity to defeat a second superpower which more than anything would empower their message and... improve their ability to plan operations,” he said in a rare joint appearance with the secretary of state, Ms Hillary Clinton.
But he said he doesn’t “know whether Al Qaeda would move its headquarters” back into Afghanistan, but if the Taliban takes control of parts of Afghanistan, it would provide “added space” or strategic depth for Al Qaeda.
Both Mr Gates and Ms Clinton said the US was committed to a regional strategy to build long-standing relations with Afghanistan and Pakistan, insisting President, Mr Barack Obama’s deliberate approach to set the right objectives and policies for Afghanistan was necessary and proper.
The Taliban insurgency currently has the momentum in Afghanistan, Mr Gates said, adding that a Taliban takeover of the country would empower the Al Qaeda terrorist network. “Because of our inability and the inability, frankly, of our allies to put enough troops in Afghanistan, the Taliban do have the momentum right now,” he said
Mr Gates made clear that no matter what Mr Obama decides on immediate troop levels, the US will remain in Afghanistan to continue efforts to dismantle terrorist organisations and help with economic development and nation building.
“We’re not leaving Afghanistan,” he said, adding: “There should be no uncertainty in terms of our determination to remain in Afghanistan and to continue to build a relationship of partnership and trust with the Pakistanis. That’s long term. That’s a strategic objective of the US.”

Air India suspends pilot

New Delhi, Oct. 6: Air India has suspended a pilot and a crewmember over the mid-air scuffle episode that took place on Tuesday evening.
Air India has suspended Ranbir Arora, the captain of flight IC 884 and flight purser Amit Khanna.
Addressing a press conference, the president of Indian Commercial Pilots Association, Mr Shailendra Singh, demanded a speedy sorting out of the issue as it puts a question mark on the credibility of the national carrier.
Mr Singh said that there was no panic in the association about the reports on the enquiry.
He also said that the pilots have to respect the management and give them the right information.
On Monday, Captain Ranbir Arora had hinted that the cockpit was unmanned during the scuffle.
However, the national carrier declared that the cockpit was not unmanned during the scuffle, and the security of the passengers was not compromised with.

Maoists kill abducted J’khand cop

Ranchi, Oct. 6: The decapitated body of a Jharkhand police officer, who had been abducted by Maoists and was sought to be swapped for three of their leaders, including Kobad Ghandy, was found on the Ranchi-Jamshedpur highway Tuesday morning.
Francis Induwar, who worked as an intelligence officer in the Special Branch, had been kidnapped on September 30.
The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) left a pamphlet claiming the killing, a police officer said. “Francis has been awarded death to protest the police repression,” stated the pamphlet by the outlawed group.
In New Delhi, the Union home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, called it “a cold-blooded murder”.
“I condemn it,” the minister said. “It is not acceptable. They have killed him in cold blood.”
He said that no demand was made for a swap of prisoners. “The DGP has told me there was no demand for a swap of prisoners. Besides, we are governed by the rule of the law.

PM: Need simple tax frame for growth

New Delhi
Oct. 6: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday acknowledged the need to rationalise and simplify tax structure and adequate infrastructure for growth of food processing industry in the country. The “sunrise” sector, which grew at 14.7 per cent in the last financial year despite economic slowdown, can catapult India’s growth story and replicate the success of the Indian IT industry globally, Dr Singh claimed
“Though primary agricultural commodities are mostly exempted from taxes, processed foods are subjected to multiple levies. There is an urgent need to rationalise and simplify tax structure,” Dr Singh said, adding that despite being a major food producer, the country’s share in the global processed food trade is less than two per cent.
At present, many states are levying additional cess even when the empowered panel of finance ministers of states on value-added tax has suggested a four per cent VAT on processed fruits and vegetables, hampering the flow of investment into the sector.
Inaugurating a conference of food processing ministers of different states, the Prime Minister assured that the government would formulate a National Food Processing Policy to spell out the vision for rapid growth in food processing.

People spent 4 nights in tiger-infested forest

Nallamala

Oct. 6: In the most inaccessible area, at the foothills of the Nallamala in Kottapalle mandal of Kurnool district, hundreds were marooned for nearly past five days as the Srisailam backwater had flooded their villages.
Villagers had to spend four horrifying nights in the Ankalamma Gattu forest area. This is in the Nallamala tiger reserve. People had only flood water to drink and were living constantly under the fear of attack by wild animals.
When a crew from this newspaper reached the village with a relief team on Tuesday, people were heading back to their villages.
It was reported that some people were washed away as they tried to return home. Their villages are situated near the Pothireddypadu head regulator.
The residents of Madugula, Yerramatam and Musalamadugu said they were completely neglected by the government officials.
Ms B. Venkatanagalakshmi of Madugula, a flood victim, said, “We took an
unmechanised boat to reach the foothills of the forest along with our kids. Then we had climbed about 80 to 100 feet. We had to spend the nights in the forest in the pitch dark. There was always a fear of attack by wild animals. It was also raining very hard. We had no water to drink and many of us are now suffering from diarrhoea and fever.”
The relief material had to cover 88 kms to reach
Kottapalle from Kurnool, first by road and then by a boat.
Flood water in this area has completely destroyed the paddy and sunflower crops.

Oct. 6: The South Central Railway (SCR) has suffered a loss of Rs 25 crore in the recent floods across the state.
The revenue loss between October 2 and 5, on account of disruption of rail services is to the extent of Rs 12.5 crore (freight traffic being Rs 10 crores and passenger traffic of Rs 2.5 crore).
However the good news is that the railway lines will be restored after October 15 in the affected sections.
The figure was given out by Mr K. Muniappa, the minister of state for railways, at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad on Tuesday. It may be recalled that heavy rains and floods resulted in overflowing of water on to the railway tracks between Mantralayam and Irnagallu stations and Yermaras-Chiksugar Stations, which led to disruption of train services on the Wadi-Raichur-Guntakal section, the main route connecting the Western and Southern India.

Over 100 temples damaged in state

Hyderabad
Oct. 6: Temples in the state have not been spared the fury of the Rain God Varuna.
More than a hundred temples, significantly the Guru Raghavendra Swamy temple at Mantralayam, Jogalamba temple at Alampur and Lord Hanuman temple at Beechpally along the banks of the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers, have suffered extensive damage due to the floods and rains.
The extent of the damage is being assessed by the endowments department.
On Tuesday, the endowments commissioner, Mr P. Sundara Kumar, said: “We are assessing the extent of the damage in all the temples. Many are affected in Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts. A survey is on.”
He said the damage is colossal with regard to the Raghavendra Swami temple. Scores of smaller temples on the banks of the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers have either been washed away or are severely damaged. Thousands of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Karnataka visit the Mantralayam temple.
Though the water is gradually receding, the silence inside is eerie, said officials who have visited it. The carcasses of animals and human bodies are reportedly strewn around the temple.
The famous Alampur Jogulamba, which was also inundated, is one of the 18 Shakti peethas and located about 12 km from Kurnool town on the banks of the Tungabhadra.
The 7th-century Siva temple and Nava Brahma temples in Alampur, believed to be built by the Badami Chalukyas, too, were submerged. The waters of the Krishna river entered the Narasimha temple at Vedadri, near Jaggayyapet, in the Krishna district.
As the water entered Muktyala village, the historic Siva temple was closed down. Mattapalli Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Nalgonda district was also flooded.
Despite the flooding, though, priests performed the Krishnaveni pooja on the banks of the river Krishna to calm the god.
The famous Sagar temple dedicated to Shiva, near Nagarjunasagar, was fully submerged while the temple town of Amravati and a well known historic Buddhist site were cut off. Water flowed a foot above the platform of the historic Amaravati Siva temple.
The Krishna waters have entered the Dattatreya temple in Kurgadda near Maktal in Mahabubnagar district. Several other places of worship including dargarhs and mosques were also hit by the heavy down pour and floods.
The revenue minister, Mr D. Prasad Rao, said revenue authorities were assessing the extent of the damage

Rosaiah will continue as CM

Hyderabad
Oct. 6: The Congress high command is learnt to have chalked out a plan to address the succession issue in the state. In all likelihood, it will allow Mr K. Rosaiah to continue as the Chief Minister and CLP leader and convince the Kadapa MP, Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy, that he will have to wait for some more time before being considered for any promotion.
The high command will summon Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy to Delhi probably after October 10 and let its mind known to him before he meets the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi.
The Congress president’s political adviser, Mr Ahmed Patel, finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee and the home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram have been asked to rein in Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. The three-member team will convey the high command’s decision to Mr Jagan and also tell him that the party will never ignore the services of Y.S. Rajasekhar’s family and their interests will be protected. Based on the “inputs” given by these three leaders, Mrs Sonia Gandhi will meet Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. Sources said that Rajya Sabha MP, Dr K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, who is also the mentor of the Jagan camp, will be told by the high command to see that the CLP meeting passes off smoothly.
After taking an assurance from him, the CLP meeting will be held to pass two resolutions. One will be a condolence over the death of YSR, and another one-line resolution “authorising” the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to “select” the CLP leader. The observers will convey the same to the Congress president. In order to send a strong message to several first time MLAs, the high command will see to it that Mr Rosaiah’s name be proposed by Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy himself.
This is the formula which will be adopted by the party high command and sources said that Mr Rosaiah alone will be at the top post in the state as they consider him amicable to all sections and groups in the party.

Jr NTR donates to CM fund

Hyderabad
Oct. 6: Actor and Telugu Desam’s star campaigner Junior NTR donated Rs 20 lakh to the Chief Minister’s fund for flood relief, creating ripples in political circles.
By donating funds to the Chief Minister’s fund, Junior NTR has ignored the call made by his uncle, the TD chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, to donate generously to the NTR Trust.
The actor also drove to the Secretariat with the Congress Rajya Sabha MP, Dr K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, a close friend of the former Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy. He has caused acute embarrassment to the TD as Mr Naidu criticises Mr Rao as an extra constitutional authority.
The TD MLA, Mr Kodali Nani, was also with Junior NTR when he met the Chief Minister.
“My grandfather used to generously donate to flood victims and I have been following in his footsteps,” said Junior NTR. “I wanted to visit the flood hit areas but stayed back as it would distract relief operations.”
Asked why he did not respond to his uncle’s call, the hero said he would also contribute to the NTR Trust.
Dr Rao dismissed any political overtones to the event. When reporters wondered whether he was continuing Operation Akarsh, a code name given to YSR’s attempt to woo Opposition members, he said it was not fair to politicise flood relief.
But sources said Chief Whip Mr Mallu Bhatti, a staunch loyalist of YSR, orchestrated the combined show of Junior NTR and Mr Rao.
It was the TD MLA who contacted Chief Whip and conveyed the hero’s decision to donate to CMRF and the former suggested the idea of giving the cheque in the presence of Dr Rao.
However, not all YSR loyalists were pleased by this. “KVP should not have travelled in Junior NTR’s car,” said a minister. ”It only created news for a while and will not give much mileage to us.” The TD leaders said that Junior NTR wanted to beat Chiranjeevi’s son, Mr Ramcharan Teja, who donated Rs 10 lakh.
